“We gain interested people through our online campaigns. We gain customers when we get our materials in their hands…”
Not using print materials is slowing you down even in the age of the internet.
People respond to tactile things. There is a deep need to feel, to touch, that stimulates different parts of the brain than visual stimulation alone. Even if you are a completely online company, the chances are you can gain more clients and customer by having print materials.
Print is an experience -The psychology of print
Perception is an active process. Touch includes information about you (e.g. your muscles, joints) as well as about what you are touching. To “be in touch with” a product, company or person is a primary urge. Our first intelligence is sensory refinement.
The experience of holding something in our hands changes how we perceive a product. Retail stores know that if you pick something up, you are much more likely to buy it. From Apple computers to clothing, stores are set up to engage you tactually and emotionally.
Printed materials offer a chance to present your brand quality, strength, and other qualities (eco friendly, glossy, solid, trustworthy) through a second channel. What you say can be backed up through more primal clues that reinforce and strengthen the logical arguments.
Print offers permanence
Corporate Image is a print manufacturer and 70% of our marketing is online marketing. What we understand is that we gain interested people through our online efforts, but we get customers when we get product and samples in their hands.
For you web pages, you get excited if people spend 1 minute or more on a page. The sad truth is, people surf and are very distracted online. It is a busy, shifting medium. A well designed print piece creates a more focused, concentrated way to engage your customer’s time and attention.
Once it is read, that information can sit on a shelf for reference. This shelf presence means you are always in front of your audience, even when the power goes out.
Print builds confidence
A beautifully printed piece shows that you have pride in your message, your product and your company. It can build your sales, give your sales people a great tool as well as generate interest in your company long after someone has forgotten your URL.
Whether you are showcasing building products for the contract industry, handing client’s financial information, or providing medical information, the experience and solidity of your marketing materials gives your customers confidence.

From sales, design, pre-press, press operators and everyone who touches your product our main concern is helping you get exactly what you want, when you need it. Corporate Image takes sustainability seriously. For over 30 years, we have created world class products which are 100% recyclable, with no vinyls, no plastics. The binders board we use in our 3 ring binders is 100% post consumer waste and we can FSC certify your project if you wish. We also print with soy inks! We can help you meet or exceed your sustainability goals.
Corporate Image has been using 100% post consumer waste board for our binders for over 30 years. We have huge resources of recycled papers to match the look feel and print quality you need and nearly everything we run is FSC certified. On top of this, everything we make – from our 3 ring binders, pocket folders to sales boxes – is recyclable.
We believe in recycling as a way to protect our natural resources and prevent waste. But, when is it best to use recycled papers and when is it a greater impact? Sappi paper has a new resource for you.
Here is a first look on why it is important to recycle paper:
WASTE REDUCTION IS A FUNDAMENTAL TENET
There are many facets to recycling, from the process itself to the benefits and concerns. Sappi has worked to bring a resource that addresses many of these issues.
Designers across many industries have asked us this question, so we feel it is time to address it here. How many pages do pocket folders hold?
1 or 2 pocket folders with flat pockets
A flat pocket in a pocket folder and a flat spine will hold about 15 sheets, which means a two pocket folder can hold 30 sheets. This may mean your folder feels pretty full though.
1 or 2 pocket folder with a capacity spine
The capacity spine is very helpful, even with a flat pocket. The pocket folder doesn’t bow open and so sits better when full. Added bonus, each pocket can hold 20 sheets. So a 1 pocket folder would hold 20 sheets, a 2 pocket – 40 sheets.
Pocket folders with capacity pockets
There are two possibilities here.
Expandable pockets can hold up to 50 sheets of paper (each). These pockets sit flat until you need them, then they fold out. Great if you have variable amounts of data that you need to hand out.
Box pockets in pocket folders are the other option. These can be as big as 1/2″ to 3/4″ so they hold a lot of paper. We would suggest looking at other options at the 3/4″ size, as the weight of the paper can become an issue. Also, if you are creating a 2 pocket folder with box pockets, you may consider 1 flat pocket and 1 box pocket or two smaller box pockets for stability.
When designing your next custom pocket folder, try to get an idea of how it will be used and if there is a set amount of materials going into it. The expandable pocket folder offers the most range if the materials are variable.
Pocket folders can hold a lot more paper than you might think. Once you know what is going into your folder, all of your pocket folder options become clear!
For the last 20 years we have heard that the world is going paperless, and yet companies are printing materials all the time. So what is happening?
The Psychology of Print
People respond to physical, tactile materials. Look at books. Some people read on kindles or other devices, but for most people I know, the feel of the book, the weight and even the turning of pages are part of the experience of the book. Books are experiences, not a collection of words.
Your presentation and marketing materials are experiences. People respond to the craftsmanship and heft of quality objects in a way an email can not mimic.
Sometimes you just need printed materials.
Some industries need to make sure the information they produce is always available.
Healthcare- From patient files to forms, this industry is paper-intensive, and predicts to be even more so over the coming years. This is one industry that if the lights go out, that information needs to be in the patients hand and available.
Also, it is a lot more comforting to have the information to read in hand instead of just receiving a web address (“You need surgery – go to this website for more information.” is not what I would want to hear…)
Legal – Papers need to be signed, stamped, delivered, read and re-read. Imagine a wedding certificate as an email. Much less romantic.
Financial / Real Estate / Insurance – All these industries produce paper that you need to have access to. If you are investing in a house, stocks or a new business it is nice to have a strong, well made folder or binder to hold your papers. It builds confidence that the organization you are dealing with exists, is legitimate and is planning to be there for you.
Print is just one component of your marketing and presentation, but it is an important one. Companies are printing less, but smarter – creating stand out pieces that have great feel, outstanding print and graphics and work with their branding.
Less but better is the mantra. Maybe you used to print 40,000 pocket folders every year. Much of that was sent to prospects that were not very warm or even pulled from lists. Now you make 10,000 folders – beautiful, a little heavier paper, maybe soft-touch lamination for a great feel – and send them to better qualified prospects. Your returns are higher and your costs are lower. That quality difference will be noticed and pay off with the clients.
What to look for in your Print Manufacturer? Your Success.
You don’t want to align your company with cheap folders, 3 ring binders that fall apart or a box that won’t close, and yet that is often what you get.
A print manufacturer should stress quality, knowledge, service and have the internal design staff to help you get exactly what you want and need.
Corporate Image has been creating custom presentation materials – from 3 ring binders, pocket folders to boxes of all types – for over 30 years. We come from a book binding tradition that started over 150 years ago and developed into what we are today.

So why limit your exposure to PVC?
Our sister company Naked Binder makes off the shelf eco friendly 3-ring binders and pocket folders and has done a lot of research on vinyls, plastics and the environment. Corporate Image has been printing with soy inks, using recycled papers and board and making custom recycled and recyclable 3-ring binders, pocket folders and boxes for nearly 30 years. Together we plan to make recyclable 3-ring binders and folders the standard, eliminating tons of vinyl waste in our landfills, offices and homes.
Why you ask? So happy you did!
No other plastic contains or releases as many dangerous chemicals. These include dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, cadmium, and organotins. There’s no safe way to manufacture, use or dispose of PVC products
In You and your food. As a persistent bioaccumulative toxin (PBT), it does not breakdown rapidly and travels around the globe, accumulating in fatty tissue and concentrating as it goes up the food chain. Dioxins from Louisiana manufacturing plants migrate on the winds and concentrate in Great Lakes fish. Dioxins are even found in hazardous concentrations in the tissues of whales and polar bears and in Inuit mother’s breast milk. The dioxin exposure of the average American already poses a calculated risk of cancer of greater than 1 in 1,000 – thousands of times greater than the usual standard for acceptable risk. Really scary is that dioxins concentrate in breast milk to the point that human infants now receive high doses, orders of magnitude greater than those of the average adult.
Air pollution near plants: In Mossville, Louisiana, air monitoring conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1999 showed concentrations of vinyl chloride more than 120 times higher than the ambient air standard.
Working in plants: Studies have documented links between working in vinyl chloride production facilities and the increased likelihood of developing diseases including angiosarcoma of the liver, a rare form of liver cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, lymphomas, leukemia, and liver cirrhosis.
The multitudes of additives required to make PVC useful make large scale post consumer recycling nearly impossible for most products and interfere with the recycling of other plastics. Of an estimated 7 billion pounds of PVC thrown away in the US, only 14 million – less than 1/2 of 1 percent – is recycled. The Association of Post Consumer Plastics Recyclers declared efforts to recycle PVC a failure and labeled it a contaminant in 1998. We tried. Learn more about how that went.
Although vinyl is in theory recyclable, there are currently no vinyl recycling programs available. The vast majority of PVCs end up in landfill or incinerated – and both are environmentally hazardous. Currently 0.1% to 3% of vinyl is recycled (mostly industrial waste) of the 2 billion and 4 billion pounds of PVC that is discarded in the US every year.
PVC poses a great risk in building fires, as it releases deadly gases long before it ignites, such as hydrogen chloride which turns to hydrochloric acid when inhaled. As it burns, whether accidentally or in waste incineration, it releases yet more toxic dioxins. PVC burning in landfill fires may now be the single largest source of dioxin releases to the environment. If you see the former entry about recycling, with the approximately 8400 landfill fires every year in the US, this is an issue.

The 2014 How Design Live conference was full of information, visuals and conversation.
While we talked binders, printing, glue-less pocket folders and the finer details of corrugates, the conference had a lot to offer besides shop talk.
We met Dandy Duck, a hard drinking, world traveler if we have ever met one.
We also walked by the finish line for the Boston marathon (Boston Strong!) everyday.
And we have one photo of Jenny nearly getting arrested…
Also, really enjoyed talking to the people at Monadnock Paper, New Leap paper, Feierisen, Johnny Cupcake, Emma and so many more!

For those of you who like the concise half sheet notebook binders, you will be happy to know that you can get all the extras with a small binder that are available with a full sized binder.
Notebook binders are great for meetings, conferences, workshops. A great combination of form and function, these smaller 3-ring binders offer great branding in a package people will enjoy carrying around. Many people despair at finding the same great “extras” that you can get with a full sized binder.
Corporate Image would like to let you know that a notebook binder has no limitations!
Index Tab Dividers for notebook binders
Available in banks of 4-8 tabs, full color printing, the notebook tab dividers are every bit as flexible and customizable as full sized tabs.
Paper Pockets for half sheet notebook binders
Pockets in vinyl binders rip out after a few uses, but these great paper pockets will last. A paper binder pocket is a clip in pocket folder for your binders. It can be used combined to work both as a tab divider or separate pocket depending on what you need. This means information can be added anywhere in the binder, not just shoved in on the inside covers.
Added benefits are the ability to print full color for maximum branding – these binder pockets will match any of your other pieces from the binder to you information. If you business is very eco-friendly, a fully recyclable bare board binder pocket might be the way to go:
Half sheet notebook binders have a full range of options that can help you get your information to the people you want to reach. The smaller binder saves you on shipping costs, materials and printing costs while delivering a big impact.
How do you decide between a pocket folder, presentation binder or a 3-ring binder?
First off I am going to assume that you know what each of these items are. (if not, scoot down to the bottom of the post – just don’t tell anyone)
Time to talk to yourself. If you can answer these questions, it will make your choice easier:
Get a 3-ring Binder -
if over 220 sheets of paper, it needs to last and or is heavily used.
The more paper you need to use and the more heavily used your information is, I would suggest a 3-ring binder. The heavier board means it will stand up to abuse better and keep looking great. And also, the weight of all that paper risks pulling a rivet out of a presentation binder.
These are great for proposals – especially in Engineering and Construction – interior design, sample kits, car companies, and a lot of other uses. Also ideal for conferences and important meetings. Added bonus of branding for quality, sturdiness and design possibilities.
Get a Presentation Binder -
if under 220 sheets of paper, paper needs to be locked in and/or there is some variable paper (presentation binders have pockets too!)
Presentation binders straddle the hardback 3-ring binder and a pocket folder in that they have pockets and a ring. The paperboard is not as sturdy as a 3-ring binder, so if it is going to be heavily used over a longer period of time – consider going to the 3-ring binder.
Many healthcare information packets use presentation binders for a few reasons: It only gets heavy use for a limited period of time, pockets allow extra information to be easily stored and the rings hold the important information in place.
Get a Pocket Folder -
if you have a smaller amount of paper that may need to be accessed out of order.
Sometimes a pocket folder is the ideal thing. Great branding possibilities, easy to cary and organizes all of your papers in a flash.
We have seen a lot of these in healthcare and financial information packets, and for anything that just needs to hold less, but important, paper.
Printed or plain 18pt or 22pt paper with pockets that is folded so the pockets are on the inside. Usually with 1 or 2 pockets that can be horizontal or vertical. All this brings a huge amount of variations of pocket styles, capacity pockets…
A heavy recycled board (in our case 94pt to 110pt and 100% post consumer waste) that can be bare, wrapped in cloth or printed paper sheets with a 3-ring mechanism to hold various amounts of paper. We case and line our binders like a hardcover book. Why? So they are the strongest 3-ring binders in the world.
So you have your 3-ring binder template and you are ready to create a masterpiece of art and branding that will make your client go crazy with happiness.
So where should you pull those bleeds out to?
What are bleeds in printing? Let us refer to Wikipedia:
Make sense? Manufacturing and printing is amazingly exact, but there are tolerances. The 1/8″ bleed allows for slight inconsistencies in printing, trimming, casing and lining your 3-ring binder to insure your art looks great.
If you are used to designing for the internet, consider this like the differences in how browsers read your code. You have to adjust for that too.
Here is what you will see. For simplicity, we are working on a 3-ring binder liner template. In example one, the art is pulled up to the cut line for the edge of the binder. If there is the tiniest variation anywhere in the process, you may get a small white strip on the right side of your liner. Blah. Click the pictures to see them larger.
If you pull your image out to the 1/8″ bleed line – all is good and your 3-ring binder liner will always look good.
Paying attention to your bleeds when working on a custom 3-ring binder or pocket folder will not only make your client happy, but also you (not rushing around to redo the art) and your manufacturer (us!).
Spread happiness. Pay attention to bleeds!
In case you are wondering, the photo is from the Des Moines Pappajohn Sculpture Garden which is rather amazing.
Corporate Image is proud to announce that three of our clients have won 2014 American Package Design Awards

A pocket folder seems so simple when you use it, but sometimes people get tripped up in designing them. So we are starting a series:
Using a Pocket Folder Template – design issues you can avoid and make your life easier!
While the series title seems unnecessarily long, the series can still save you a lot of time and frustration.
Today there are two things we want to talk about
#1: Positioning text on a pocket folder pocket:
I am not going to lie to you, this is a presentation binder (a paperboard 3-ring binder) template with capacity pockets. The templates work exactly the same way so I am going to use this.
Pockets print with the front of the press sheet and fold into the inside of the folder. This means the text needs to read “upside down” to the cover and back cover of the pocket folder. See my lovely example here:
When the pockets are folded into the inside of the folder, they read perfectly.
#2: Watch out for the Business card positioning on a pocket folder pocket
So, now that our text is positioned properly, we have to watch out for where we put our text in relation to our business cards. This seems obvious when the card is in the folder, but less so at 3am when you are designing that folder.
Example 1: Lets face it, Manatee films is super psyched about their new pocket folder.
Example #2: Well, they were psyched until they put the business card in. Unless your business cards and pocket folders are carefully designed together, this is not going to work.
These two things are common mistakes in pocket folder design. Stay tuned for more tips in our series:
Using a Pocket Folder Template – design issues you can avoid and make your life easier!

We have found solutions to showcase window frames, bricks, tiles, carpets as well as the best proposal binders you can find.
Our products are eco friendly from the 3-ring binders to the corrugate boxes, printed with eye popping color soy inks on FSC certified papers.
Whether you are in the contract industry, engineering or construction let us help you get the quality and impact you deserve.
In the cut throat world of printing, it seems like you can get a custom presentation folder or pocket folder for next to nothing.
Be careful what you ask for when you ask for a cheap pocket folder.
If you want to make a really good impression, you need good materials. Whether your client is getting a remodel of their kitchen, investing in stocks or getting health information, a poorly made, poorly printed presentation pocket folder is going to make you look like you don’t know what you are doing.
What should you be looking for in a presentation pocket folder?
In-house packaging designers.
If you need a special design, make sure your printer can handle it. You don’t want a rough approximation of your design, but and exact precision folder. Make sure to get a mock-up to insure it is what you want.
Professional pre press.
Insure your files are complete and there are no errors. If you need a change in how your job is printing to insure highest quality, this is the place to catch it.
no gang runs
Gang run is cheaper for your printer because they are not adjusting the press to your job, but to the average job. The pressman’s job on these runs is to make everything OK.
Ask yourself the question: Do you want your clients to see you as the average company?
print in house
Control over color, quality and is all easier if it is done in house.
Corporate Image has in-house package designers, pre press and press-people with years of experience. Our job is to make sure that you stand out as the exceptional company that you are. We deliver the highest quality presentation folders and pocket folders and have created industry standards in many of our products that other companies are struggling to meet.
We have made a lot of pocket folders over the years. Through working with thousands of clients we have come up with a list of the 25 best pocket folder designs.
To find the best pocket folders we looked at versatility, ease of use, interesting designs and best printing and manufacturing. We are not looking at the artwork on the folders (that my friends is up to you) but the actual design of the folders.
From capacity folders, glueless folders, eco friendly and ship flat folders, we have them all.
It used to be that eco friendly was code for poorly made. Not anymore.
Eco friendly marketing materials (from 3-ring binders and pocket folders to tab dividers and sales boxes) are better value, better quality and better for your image.
For the last 3 years the 3-ring binder voted best binder in North America (and once Best Binder in the World) was a Corporate Image binder. Our products offer a greater range of printing and customizing opportunities and an amazing look, feel and range of possibilities.
Greener, eco friendly materials and practices.
Corporate Image is a green FSC certified printer who has been using soy based inks for over 20 years. Our binders are made with 100% post consumer waste board, our papers use recycled content and the entire binder is recyclable.
Along with using recycled materials, our products are built to last. One of our bare board binders (from Naked Binder – our eco friendly office supply company) was tested to 250,000 flexes without fail. That means you can open and close that binder 20 times a day for 34 years. Try that with vinyl.
Marketing materials show who you are as a company – what you believe, how you practice and how well you will perform. Corporate Image believes in what we do, and we take pride in making the best pocket folders, binders and boxes you can find. From our printing and packaging designers to construction and shipping, we make sure you are getting what you want and more.
Corporate Image sets the standard that other manufacturers are trying to meet.

Whether you design pocket folders every day or just once in a while, it can be nice to have a design resource that covers folder styles, options and materials.
We make pocket folders everyday and we know what works, what doesn’t and what can make your folder stand out. This design resource covers more than just one and two pocket folder designs (though we have a bunch of those!), but also expandable and capacity pocket folders, glueless pocket folders and folders that hold more than just paper. Check out the Pocket Folder Styles guide for more on those.
What kind of customizing you need done can also be an issue. Do you want a digitally printed folder or offset? Foil Stamping and debossing? Find out your options for custom pocket folders printing here.
This pocket folder resource is part of an effort by Corporate Image to make your design life easier. We will be adding more information as time passes, as well as more resource centers (we have the 3-ring binder resource pages up here, and our sales box and tab divider design resources too!)
