Working on a printed presentation piece and wondering if you should go digital or offset (litho) printing?
This info graphic (found here) helps explain the basics of it.
Offset or litho printing still offers higher quality, but digital printing has been catching up quickly. There are a few things digital just can’t do (yet) that make offset printing a real stand out option.
The long and short of it is: big job and specific PMS or metallic inks? Offset. Short run and 4 color process? Digital. Be aware that both this and the info-graphic are not complete so talk to your printer about what you need (our people are well versed in the subtle strengths and weaknesses of each.)
Remember, if you are on the fence about which way to go with your printing, call us and we can work with you to get everything you want!
Get the best price, or make it look great. This marketing dilemma has been handed down for ages.
Lets face it, in order to represent your company or your client well, quality is key. If what you hand out to your customer is poorly made, badly printed and falls apart, what does that say about your company?
On the other hand, there are only so many marketing dollars and they have to last as long as possible. Justifying a major printed expense when budgets are tight is nearly impossible.
So what is the answer? Both are right.
The real question is why you can’t have both? Take the above piece as an example. Great printing, easy display, strong presentation and in a sturdy binder making it easy to keep handy on a shelf.
Could this have been done in a way that cost a lot more? Absolutely. Is it a design that offers a great answer to the problem of showing 9 pieces of stone? Yes it is.
If you have issues with quality vs cost, perhaps you need to talk to your packaging manufacturer more. Corporate Image has been in crafting 3-ring binder, pocket folders and boxes of all types for 30 years. Our quality is unmistakable and well know in the design community. Equally important is our experience with product design which allows us to envision a range of solutions that can give you the quality within your budget.
Don’t get me wrong, we love the super complicated, multi-piece jigsaw puzzle-ism marketing kits that just blow everyone’s mind. Everyone from production to product design gets to rethink what is possible for those! That doesn’t mean we down’t love the clean lines of a great presentation piece that solves a problem just as hard – balancing the budget and getting great presentation materials.
If anyone tries to convince you that there is a choice between your budget and quality, find a new presentation manufacturer. In fact, call us!
Neenah paper is working to make specing paper for your job even easier.
We all have cabinets, shelves and drawers full of paper swatches, but really we gravitate to what we know best. Neenah is trying to make it easier to browse, sort color and find the exact paper you need.
If you want the Neenah Cabinet app on your Mac desktop, make sure you have OS10.8. I sure don’t ( I am behind the times!), so I couldn’t load it. It will have to live on the ipad for now.
Admittedly, for me the feel of the paper is key, but if I can narrow down my choices ahead of time it will save me a lot of time.
Want it? Check it out on the Neenah website here.

Thinking of Rebranding?
First, you need to decide if it’s the right time to do so – then contact Corporate Image for all your new presentation
Haha, but in all seriousness, it really needs to be the right time for your company to rebrand. All companies will
at some point come to the decision to rebrand. For some, it happens early on once they’ve discovered who they
really are while with others, it occurs after many years of having grown (or outgrown) their brand. For many
companies they decide they are bored with their logo, sick of their color scheme, need an updated mission
statement, etc. and go on a whole tangent of wanting to change everything. Rebranding your whole company is
not for the faint of heart. It requires changing EVERYTHING- from your letterhead, to your website, to your office
signage so you really need to ask yourself if it fits within your goals for your company.
With my past experience working in a Marketing firm I know the steps it takes to develop a brand that people
remember, respect, and trust. A good brand consists of the right customer (positioning), a promise, and a
commitment from your team to instill it into the customers. The graphic below really depicts the best questions/
reasons your company has for rebranding. Ask yourself these before making the leap!

In case you wondered, Corporate Image does have a Pinterest account.
Why this matters to you? Not only are we posting cool marketing pieces and eco friendly office equipment (which we are suckers for), but we also are posting great design, sustainable architecture and some garden stuff (which we are suckers for).
Since we are interested in design and sustainability, we have been checking out a lot of interesting items.
The first Tumbleweed home, built when Jay Shafer lived in Iowa no less:
New York City’s High Line Park, which I am kind of in love with.
The art and design of Edward Tufte:
There is a lot more there. Check us out on Pinterest, or just call and talk to us. We’d like that.
Corporate Image is proud to announce that three of our clients have won 2014 American Package Design Awards
Congratulations to Prestige Tuxedo, HealthPartners and Meyocks Group / Delta Dental of Iowa!
Often we find marketing is the last thing people plan for, but it should be an integral part of a companies strategy.
We found this article in CANVAS magazine (an excellent magazine) and thought we would share:
The end of 2013 is upon us, and preparations for the New Year are under way. December is National Write a Business Plan Month – so designated to encourage unhappy employees to become their own satisfied bosses. Whether your goal is to own your own business, become a consultant, a speaker or an author, you’ll need to start with a business plan.
Even if you launched your business years ago, it’s important to revisit and refresh your plan. In recent years, the economy, technology and consumer habits have changed rapidly and dramatically, affecting every aspect of your business. That makes it absolutely vital to re-evaluate your short- and long-term strategies.
One of the most critical elements of any business plan is your marketing strategy. Too often, people don’t think through that all-important component with the same rigor they tackle aspects like projected cash flow and long-term goals.
Or, they do put thought and effort into planning for market research, promotion and positioning – and then never follow through on their great ideas.
One problem is that most entrepreneurs (or professionals or authors) don’t have marketing experience. They may be skilled tradesmen, savvy financial advisers or talented writers – the expertise they plan to build their business around – but they’re not marketers. Some don’t realize that executing a solid marketing strategy is essential to any venture’s success; others know it’s important but don’t know where to begin.
2014 AIA Gold Medal Recipient
Julia Morgan, FAIA | 2014 AIA Gold Medal Recipient
By Zach Mortice, Managing Editor, AIArchitect
The American Institute of Architects Board of Directors on Dec. 12 posthumously awarded the AIA Gold Medal to Julia Morgan, FAIA, the early 20th-century architect whose copious output of quality work secured her position as the first great female American architect. Morgan is the first woman to ever be given the AIA Gold Medal. By receiving the award, Morgan was elevated to the College of Fellows. (The AIA National Board voted unanimously to waive the eligibility rules, in this instance, that require active membership in the AIA to be elevated to Fellowship.) The last posthumous AIA Gold Medalist was Edward Larrabee Barnes, FAIA, in 2007. The AIA Gold Medal is the highest honor the AIA confers on an architect. It acknowledges an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Morgan’s legacy will be honored at the AIA 2014 National Convention and Design Exposition in Chicago.
AIA President Mickey Jacob, FAIA, notified Karen McNeil, PhD, a historian and Julia Morgan expert that was a member of the steering committee that sponsored her nomination, by telephone immediately after the Board made its decision. “Fantastic! Thank you so much!” McNeil said. “You’ve made my day. I’ll tell the team; they’ll be thrilled.”
P.S. Bit of Trivia: As far as we can tell, Julia Morgan is the first woman to ever win the AIA Gold Medal. We at Corporate Image are excited on both counts, being big fans of her work.

Over the years, Corporate Image has attended the NeoCon Conference to stay informed on developments and innovative products in the furniture industry. Many of our furniture customers use folders, custom binders, sample boxes and custom boxes to stay in front of their audiences, because there’s nothing like the feel of a sample to communicate the features and attributes of their products.
You see, design and use packaging everyday, and most of it ends up as trash.
A designer in Montreal decided to try to do something about that with a common everyday item – the toothbrush. I noticed this post on Dieline and realized that it dovetailed nicely with many of our eco friendly products (from bare board binders to corrugated boxes) that are also fully recyclable when they are finished.
Dissolve is an exploration into re-thinking the everyday design which accounts for much of our waste stream.
The needs of the Medical and Healthcare Industries for patient information packets, folders and binders are unique.
At Corporate Image, we work with a lot with of Medical and Healthcare facilities creating better patient information packets, meeting or conference kits and and staff information folders. With the large quantity of work we have done, we thought we would share with you the ideas and trends that we have seen Medical information packets.
Patient Information Binders and Pocket Folders
As you know, keeping the patient well informed from entering your health system to treatment options can lower anxiety and help your doctors to counsel patients on their best path forward to healthier, happier lives.
This information has to be clear, well organized and easily search-able. A small binder is usually enough to present the basics of even complicated treatments with room for follow up and and ongoing regimens. Tab dividers can make for quick and focused sections as well as adding new information as needed.
Doctor Information binders – Medical Devices, Information and Pharmaceutical binders
Information on the latest and greatest in medicine can also be packaged for ease of use as well as easy finding and storage. We all know doctors, nurses and administrators get extremely busy. Providing information that is already stored, clearly marked and with interesting branding helps keep everything top of mind, so when someone needs the information is can be found immediately.

Our binders are made from 100% post-consumer waste binders board and are 100% recyclable.
Our new Natural Matte lamination is so subtle you can hardly see it. Made from polyproplene, a non-reflective film that minimizes color shift, it creates a unique, sophisticated look with a smooth, silky feel. Your 3 ring binder, tab divider, folder or custom box project will not only be protected, it will be far more earth friendly than ordinary vinyl bindes that are toxic to both the air and land.
Corporate Image partnered with this year’s HOW Conference attendees to plant 300 trees. For each business card we received at the Chicago event, we planted a tree through the American Forests Organization. The trees will help reforest areas in the United States that have been affected by severe storms and intense wildfires.
Thank you HOW attendees!

The Corporate Image staff considers itself fortunate to work with wonderfully talented clients. For more than 25 years, it’s been our pleasure to help create beautiful, compelling and effective presentation packaging. Now that we’ve expanded our product line to include eco-friendly presentation materials, we’re looking forward to making an even greater impact on the environment. From the beginning, we’ve used 100% post-consumer waste binders’ board in the production of our binders and now we can take advantage of new papers that contain up to 100% PCW for folders, software packaging and boxes. It’s an exciting time as companies, government agencies, designers and universities are making the switch from vinyl binders which are detrimental to the environment to new sustainable alternatives. Our experienced team can help the most sophisticated print operation all the way to the novice find innovative and unique solutions to their packaging needs while delivering outstanding service.
Corporate Image is located in the heartland of the U.S. where Interstates 80 and 35 meet. That puts you in Des Moines, Iowa where the company was founded almost 30 years ago. The mission then was to develop an alternative to the vinyl binder that was attractive and not detrimental to the environment. Europe at the time was moving away from toxic vinyl because it could not be safely incinerated or disposed of in the landfills.
We were the first company to follow their lead and started printing and manufacturing our signature FlexHinge binde in 1981. The name comes from the fact the binder is made from one piece of 100 % post-consumer waste binders board with a spine that’s formed by pressing grooves into it. This makes for a very strong hinge that can be opened and closed over 250,000 times without the hinge failing. That’s the equivalent of opening and closing the binder 20 times a day for 34 years.
Today, our company is even more resolved to helping the environment by offering new products made from up to 100% recycled paper. We’ve found innovative ways to create attractive new designs by mixing and matching materials, so the products stand out and command attention. Our central location makes it ideal for reaching our markets around the country in only a matter of days, so you get your shipments fast and on time.
The flush cut binder from Corporate Image is a great innovation in green binder technology. We designed a binder that is constructed with our 100% post-consumer waste binder’s board that does not need any lamination on the cover. Instead, we adhere a sturdy recycled paper to the board that can be decorated with offset printing, debossing or using metallic or pigment colored foil stamping. Then the board and paper are trimmed so the cover and liner are flush with the board edge. We also round the corners for extra durability and to enhance the appearance. The result is an interesting blend of board, paper and ink that reveals the core of the binders board. It’s a great look and 100% recyclable. Our customers love the fact that the binder it unique, doesn’t have any coating or lamination and it communicates their commitment to the environment.
