We are proud and honored to receive the Eska Frog Award for 2015!
The 2015 Best Binder was our first in-house binder to win the competition. We created the wood 3-ring binder for both Corporate Image customers and Naked Binder, our off the shelf, sustainable binder company. These sustainable sourced wood binders offer all the joys of real wood with a core of 100% post consumer waste binders board. Available in cherry and birch wood.
Naked Binder sells these individually and without customization, but at Corporate Image we offer foil stamping for these binders to create a custom 3-ring binder that really stands out! These were for Graphic Wood Technologies:

1 color to 6 color printing:
How to decide what’s best for your project.
So what does 1 color vs. 6 color, spot color vs. 4 color process printing mean to you and your project? How do you know what option is best? Well lets break down some facts about printing offset and tips that might help you with your next project.
4 color process – CYMK:
4 color process is probably the most common way to set up your artwork. With just the standard CMYK build you can make countless combinations of colored logos, full images and photos.
In this system a color image is separated into 4 different color values to create 4 images that are transferred to printing plates. When you run these on a printing press with the CYMK inks (cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow and black (the k in cmyk)) you can reproduce the original color image. Most of the entire spectrum or gamut of colors are reproduced with just the four process ink colors. Printing 4 color process is standard in the printing industry on offset presses (presses that use inks and printing plates). The quality is better than digital printing and it is cheaper in large quantity runs.
In offset printing, a spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run. CYMK can come close to matching any color, but to get it exact, a PMS color can be mixed and used for areas that need to be an exact match to, say, a logo color.
Absolutely need to match a color?
Is getting your brand color just right the main concern for you and your team? Then printing PMS colors or a combination is your best bet. Printing a standard PMS color is the best way to ensure your brand color carries over from all the collateral items you print.
If you have photos or other artwork you’d like to use on your material and an important logo in PMS colors, you might want to consider 4 color process+1 color PMS. This will allow you to place images on your project while printing your corporate colors as well. Nothing has to be sacrificed, especially not the integrity of your brand.

Is cost your main concern?
If cost is your main concern then stick with 1 color to 4 color process/PMS. Most people don’t realize that your unit price for printing one side won’t change from 1 color to 4 color whether you are using 4 PMS colors or 4 color Process. The only fee change is within the prepress charge for your project. For example, for a 1 color 3 ring binder prepress is $275, while 4 color adds only $150. A small fee to have a full range of color options at your fingertips.
If you are working on a custom printed 3 ring binder, there is one place you don’t have to skimp. Print those liners! Did you know that most binders print cover & liner on the same press sheet? So that’s one side printing people. You can print the inside or your binder with common colors from the cover at NO additional charge. This adds a lot of punch and makes you a hero to your clients. (Tell them you talked us into printing it for free!)
Do you want the greatest variety in printing options?
4 color process can run everything from gorgeous photos to solid blocks of color, so offers a great range of options.
But what if you have 4 PMS colors but still want variety in your project? Easy, SCREENS…lots of screens. You can print your PMS colors at 100% , or pull back those percentages on the same colors for a bit of variety without increasing your Prepress charges.

Corporate Image Open House
From the fold-your-own-box candy bar (find out who the visual thinkers are!) to the amazing presentations on Neenah Paper, designing with corrugates, and designing for sustainability, our open house was a fun and exciting.
Neenah Paper offered an inspiring display of papers including folding board for boxes. The range and quality of the Neenah line delighted many of the “paper people” who got very excited about the choices. Doug Grever, of Neenah was kept busy answering questions and talking with people about all of the options.
Andy Dickman, the man of corrugate packaging, was on hand with many cool projects, advice, and even handed out corrugate cowboy hats – a big favorite.
And of course, food. The drink table heavily favored Sam Adams and all of their binders!
We offered non-stop tours of the production facility, which was running full tilt all evening. Most of the designers had never seen how their projects are made, so there was a lot of excitement at the process. (We’ll post some videos as we get them in).
Thanks to everyone who came, everyone who helped and next time, we hope some of you with schedule conflicts can get here!

A 3 Ring Binder and Folder Make a Great Combination
PlayWorld’s 3 ring binder and pocket folder highlighted their corporate commitment to sustainability as well as their commitment to fun.
Corporate Image specializes in helping you make the most of your presentation packaging needs. We are your partner in creating great impressions that make people stop and look at your materials. The bottom line is we want to help you sell more of your products and services in the marketplace.
Combining your marketing efforts into one cohesive set can be cheaper (by doing everything at once) as well as help you look more professional. Perception of your brand can help drive up your sales and repeat business. From architecture and engineering firms, to hospitals, or financial institutions, being seen as trustworthy can make a world of difference.
We produced this folder and binder for secondmarket, which was really stunning because of the ultra violet coating that highlighted their logos. The binder is covered with B-Cloth, which is a poly-cotton blend that looks great and has a durable finish that resists water.
For even better presentations, try combining your custom 3 ring binder and pocket folders!
In case you wondered if Corporate Image is the premier binder manufacturer in North America, we have just won the Best Binder in North America title for the third time in 4 years.
And we are pretty excited about it!
The 2015 binder winner is very simple: Our 100% post consumer waste binders board with a cherry wood cover and liner. The binder is flush cut, showing the binders board on the edges.
Simple, but elegant. We released this binder about a month ago, and already it has been used around the US and Canada.
In answer to your questions about the wood 3 ring binders:
Can I customize a wood binder?
Absolutely. These binder look great with foil stamping on them, and it is also possible to laser etch them.
Is it real wood?
Yes it is – very, very thin wood. The logs used by the mill are sustainably sourced in the United States, and then roll cut into sheets. This wood is not only hand picked, but for every log they plant 10 trees.
What if I only want a few of these?
We can do that. Go to our Naked Binder site and you can order as few as one!
Is this binder solid wood?
No. The thin wood we use goes over our 100% post consumer waste binders board (the same board used in your hardcover books). What you are getting is real wood cut so thin it wraps like a paper!
What are people using them for?
Popular uses for the wooden binders:
As a proposal binder, these stand out. With foil, laser etching or well designed labels, your proposal will be noticed!
For manufacturers of furniture, building materials, or other wood related products, presenting your samples in a wooden binder keeps your brand consistent and makes it a joy for your clients to look at your materials.
Just making your office a happier place to work.
Have the classiest office ever. You spend a lot of time in your office, so adding a beautiful 3 ring binder that compliments your design elements is an easy choice.
The wood binder is part of a pattern at Corporate Image of creating the best binders (as well as boxes, folders and a whole lot of other things!) in the world. You can lose the worries and be relaxed in knowing your clients will be happy with the finished products. Add that to our in-house product designers, amazingly knowledgable sales team and you may find that the production of your work is the most enjoyable part of your day!
“We gain interested people through our online campaigns. We gain customers when we get our materials in their hands…”
Grab a cup of coffee. Let’s talk.
In a world of sensory overload, communicating by touch is the only way to connect emotionally with your customers.
Print is fun for us because it offers so many things just on the production end. From the craft, the smell, the feel of good paper, everyone in our building has a strong connection to our products.
The thing is, that same connection works for you too.
People respond to tactile things. There is a deep need to feel, to touch, that stimulates different parts of the brain than visual stimulation alone. Even if you are a completely online company, the chances are you can gain more clients and customer by having print materials.
Experience enhances information
Perception is an active process. To “be in touch with” a product, company or person is a primary urge. Our first intelligence is sensory refinement.
Printed materials offer a chance to present your brand quality, strength, and other qualities (eco friendly, glossy, solid, trustworthy) through a second channel. What you say can be backed up through more primal clues that reinforce and strengthen the logical arguments.
Print offers permanence
The sad truth is, people surf and are very distracted online. It is a busy, shifting medium. A well designed print piece creates a more focused, concentrated way to engage your customer’s time and attention.
Once it is read, that 3 ring binder can sit on a shelf for reference. This shelf presence means you are always in front of your audience, even when the power goes out.
Print builds confidence
Whether you are showcasing building products for the contract industry, handing client’s financial information, or providing medical information, the experience, quality and solidity of your marketing materials gives your customers confidence.
Corporate Image has been in the business of printing and manufacturing presentation materials for over 30 years. Their products have won awards from Best Binder in the World to GDUSA packaging awards and CMA awards. We specialize in 3-ring binders, pocket folders, presentation binders and boxes of all sorts. Our products are sustainable, recyclable and printed with soy inks.
Paper Weights are confusing.
As a print and binder manufacturer Corporate Image deals in all kinds of paper stocks. Whether we make a printed 3-ring binder, a pocket folder or a cool sales box, paper stocks will vary heavily.
Lets look at this question which you might run into if you want to put a 3-ring binder in a sales box.
Question: If you have 18 pt. and 100# papers how do those compare?
First off, lets find out what it all means:
Now the question is how those translate.
Up above we were looking at 100# offset text vs 18pt stock. Actually these are pretty far apart. So as we look down the list, we see that 100# text paper is only about 6pt (listed as caliper on the chart). Much lighter paper, which you would expect. 18pt., as we find out, is a very sturdy stock – useful for strong pocket folders or paperboard boxes. 100# text is great for printing that might wrap your 3 ring binder.
Is this list absolutely, always going to be exactly right? No. How a paper is made can affect both the caliper and weight. Some papers are denser, but have the same caliper as another paper. But this is a rough guide.
Paper weights will always be a bit confusing. Tag this blog so when you are working on a new design and printers are quoting papers, you can have an easy resource to ensure you know what they are talking about.
The liner of a 3-ring binder is not just a blank space that the interior pages cover, it is a rich design space that adds life, information and interest to your design project.
Good things to know about 3 ring binder liners:

Ordering binders tip #27
3-ring folders, ring folders or pocket folders with rings are just other ways of saying presentation binders.
A presentation binder is a pocket folder with rings. Made from sturdy paperboard, these ring folders are lighter than a full cased and lined binder and can have pockets on the inside of either cover. This makes them great for conferences and meetings where there is set information that everyone needs, but also the possibility of variable data that also needs to be organized.

Fascinating 3 ring binder information
You can use this information to rule the world of presentation material Trivial Pursuit and destroy at office supply Cranium!
When was the 3 ring binder invented?
That depends on where you are and who you ask.
Loose-leaf paper was patented in 1854. Also in 1854, patents were filed for both the 2-ring and 3-ring binders by Henry T. Sisson of Providence, Rhode Island. Sisson recognized the need to be able to protect pages, although he was not yet exactly sure how to fix the problem. No loose-leaf binders were available on the market at that time.
Fast forward a few years and go to Germany where Friedrich Soennecken is said to have invented ring binders in 1886 in Bonn, Germany. He also registered a patent on November 14, 1886, for his Papierlocher für Sammelmappen (“paper hole maker for folders”, or hole punch).
In the US, the Chicago Binder and File Company was one of the 1st companies to offer a binder for sale in 1899.
How are binders made and has that changed much? Yes and no…
Originally, 3 ring binders were made like hardcover books – three pieces of board (binders board – a heavy paperboard) held together with book cloth covers and end sheets. As plastics got invented, vinyl binders appeared – again three pieces of board but with two sheets of thin vinyl heat sealed at the edges and hinges. Not as strong, but easier to make.
Of course, people realized vinyl is toxic.
So now, with US binder manufacturers like Corporate Image, who are concerned with the long life of the binder as well as the health of the person using it, the best 3 ring binders are made from one sheet of binders board, cased and lined with printed sheets ( or in Naked Binder‘s case recycled papers or bare board) with a hinge pressed directly into the board. No weak spots and no vinyls, these 3 ring binders are 100% recyclable and non-toxic. It is also the strongest 3 ring binder hinge and allows for round spine binders.
How many 3-ring binders are made every year?
We have wondered the same thing, but there is no good count. In the US, our best guess is that between 40 and 60 million 3 ring binders are sold every year – mostly cheap, vinyl, disposable imported ones. That is a lot of landfill.
For fascinating binder information and history to come!
The loose leaf binder has been around since about 1860, and since then the design has had only minor changes. During the latter half of the 20th century the vinyl binder came about, billed as a cheaper modern version of the 3 ring binder.
Since those days, we have discovered that vinyl binders not only fall apart quickly, but are impossible to recycle and actually toxic.
Corporate Image started manufacturing 3 ring loose leaf binders 30 years ago and wanted to do better than what was already on the market. They designed some of the first turned edge flex hinge or European hinged binders ever made in the US.
Because the hinge of the binder is pressed directly into the board, these loose leaf binders are super strong. The covers will never just fall off with normal use or because it is cold. Also, these binders could have offset printed covers and liners allowing the artwork to be a fine piece of art.
Over the last 30 years, Corporate Image has pushed sustainability, using soy inks and 100% post consumer waste board, and design, creating a huge range of custom options for 3 ring binders.
From portfolio closures, round spines, custom window cuts, special finishes and sustainable materials, Corporate Image has pushed the loose leaf 3 ring binder into the 21st century and created a binder for the modern brand.

What should you expect from a 3-ring binder manufacturer.
Presentation and 3 ring binder manufacturers are not all alike. If you are new to the game of ordering custom printed products, we’d like to give you a few ideas of what to look for in your print manufacturer.
Innovations… Styles… Options… Strengths….
Print and presentation packaging vary heavily from job to job – many of the questions may be best answered or collaborated on with your printer. Digital or offset printing, 4 color process or 4 cp plus a spot color, the best closure for cost, strength or looks (bearing in mind that what is best for one is not always best for another). Many times your project becomes a collaborative venture as you get input from the product designers, production and sales reps, which results in a fantastic product.
Innovation from your manufacturer is also important. Knowing the capabilities best and what has worked over a large range of products allows your manufacturer to be proactive in finding you solution.
Your sales team will help you navigate your process from start to finish so you want them responsive, knowledgable and able to listen. Any printer worth their salt should be able to provide samples, estimates, mock-ups for new products, templates, proofs and double check your art.
Does your print manufacturer have product designers on staff who can create products to your specifications and work with you to get exactly what you need? Even standard products are designed. Make sure your manufacturer is not just copying a template they found on the internet.
An example: Our product designers create for strength, looks, ease of use and to work with your materials. Even in something as seemingly simple as pocket folders, we re-designed the top 25 pocket folders so you know exactly which envelope they fit in, greatest range of pages, longevity and simplicity.

At Corporate Image we deal with paper all day and really love the flexibility of the medium. Admittedly, much of ours goes into packaging and presentation materials, but that doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm for other forms of paper art!
Brooklyn-based multimedia artist Michael Hambouz creates stunning cut-paper artwork, and thanks to The Durst Organization and chashama, 18 of his large-scale cut-paper collages are now on display until November 21, 2014, in the Lobby Gallery of 1133 Avenue of the Americas in New York City.
In a celebration of both cut-paper artwork and small-town manufacturing, Factory Made utilizes a 140-year-old French Paper Company’s own renowned paper stock to give viewers a rare glimpse into the operations of one of the last independently owned paper mills in America.
On View: September 10-November 21, 2014
And after you’ve seen Factory Made, make a day of cut-paper artwork by heading down the street to the Museum of Modern Art, where the blockbuster show Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is on display until February 8, 2015.

For the last 20 years we have heard that the world is going paperless, and yet companies are printing materials all the time. So what is happening?
The Psychology of Print
People respond to physical, tactile materials. Look at books. Some people read on kindles or other devices, but for most people I know, the feel of the book, the weight and even the turning of pages are part of the experience of the book. Books are experiences, not a collection of words.
Your presentation and marketing materials are experiences. People respond to the craftsmanship and heft of quality objects in a way an email can not mimic.
Sometimes you just need printed materials.
Some industries need to make sure the information they produce is always available.
Healthcare– From patient files to forms, this industry is paper-intensive, and predicts to be even more so over the coming years. This is one industry that if the lights go out, that information needs to be in the patients hand and available.
Also, it is a lot more comforting to have the information to read in hand instead of just receiving a web address (“You need surgery – go to this website for more information.” is not what I would want to hear…)
Legal – Papers need to be signed, stamped, delivered, read and re-read. Imagine a wedding certificate as an email. Much less romantic.
Financial / Real Estate / Insurance – All these industries produce paper that you need to have access to. If you are investing in a house, stocks or a new business it is nice to have a strong, well made folder or binder to hold your papers. It builds confidence that the organization you are dealing with exists, is legitimate and is planning to be there for you.
Print is just one component of your marketing and presentation, but it is an important one. Companies are printing less, but smarter – creating stand out pieces that have great feel, outstanding print and graphics and work with their branding.
Less but better is the mantra. Maybe you used to print 40,000 pocket folders every year. Much of that was sent to prospects that were not very warm or even pulled from lists. Now you make 10,000 folders – beautiful, a little heavier paper, maybe soft-touch lamination for a great feel – and send them to better qualified prospects. Your returns are higher and your costs are lower. That quality difference will be noticed and pay off with the clients.
What to look for in your Print Manufacturer? Your Success.
You don’t want to align your company with cheap folders, 3 ring binders that fall apart or a box that won’t close, and yet that is often what you get.
A print manufacturer should stress quality, knowledge, service and have the internal design staff to help you get exactly what you want and need.
Corporate Image has been creating custom presentation materials – from 3 ring binders, pocket folders to boxes of all types – for over 30 years. We come from a book binding tradition that started over 150 years ago and developed into what we are today.

For many of you when you think of Iowa, you may be thinking Idaho (potatoes) or Ohio (Cleveland). We get it.
So besides being the best place for young professionals and apparently the new hipster capital of the country, lots of corn and soy beans – What else does Iowa have?
Get the best price, or make it look great. This marketing dilemma has been handed down for ages.
Lets face it, in order to represent your company or your client well, quality is key. If what you hand out to your customer is poorly made, badly printed and falls apart, what does that say about your company?
On the other hand, there are only so many marketing dollars and they have to last as long as possible. Justifying a major printed expense when budgets are tight is nearly impossible.
So what is the answer? Both are right.
The real question is why you can’t have both? Take the above piece as an example. Great printing, easy display, strong presentation and in a sturdy binder making it easy to keep handy on a shelf.
Could this have been done in a way that cost a lot more? Absolutely. Is it a design that offers a great answer to the problem of showing 9 pieces of stone? Yes it is.
If you have issues with quality vs cost, perhaps you need to talk to your packaging manufacturer more. Corporate Image has been in crafting 3-ring binder, pocket folders and boxes of all types for 30 years. Our quality is unmistakable and well know in the design community. Equally important is our experience with product design which allows us to envision a range of solutions that can give you the quality within your budget.
Don’t get me wrong, we love the super complicated, multi-piece jigsaw puzzle-ism marketing kits that just blow everyone’s mind. Everyone from production to product design gets to rethink what is possible for those! That doesn’t mean we down’t love the clean lines of a great presentation piece that solves a problem just as hard – balancing the budget and getting great presentation materials.
If anyone tries to convince you that there is a choice between your budget and quality, find a new presentation manufacturer. In fact, call us!
Ready to see amazing projects that designers are putting together? Fasten your seatbelt! From presentation binders to great sample kits, there are a lot of great ideas to stimulate you for your next project!
The project cover presentation materials for everything from the financial industry to medical, building to manufacturing to retail – so the chances are you will find an inspiring piece for what you are working on.
This piece holds flooring samples in an easy, well branded way that allows customers to quickly see their options and not have to juggle 5-10 different samples to see what they want.
Whether you are new to 3-ring binders and box design or an old hand, we can help you with your own presentation kits from our in house packaging design team to award winning manufacturing.
What are the differences in color profiles for print and the web?
Boy are we happy you asked.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), or four color process, is a subtractive color model, meaning if you add together CMY you should get black. Color mixes being what they are, Black was added to make sure a true black could get printed.
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is a additive color process generally used for digital devices and internet. This works on the same principle of mixing light in which a mix of red, green and blue gives you…white. Try that with ink.
PMS colors offer you a way to match exact print colors- since slight variations in mix on press can change a color. Lets say your have a VERY specific corporate color in your logo. CMYK will come very close, but if you want to be exact, you probably want to run the PMS color as a spot color. You can specify PMS for digital use, but it will get translated to RGB.
