Paper Weights are confusing.
As a print and binder manufacturer Corporate Image deals in all kinds of paper stocks. Whether we make a printed 3-ring binder, a pocket folder or a cool sales box, paper stocks will vary heavily.
Lets look at this question which you might run into if you want to put a 3-ring binder in a sales box.
Question: If you have 18 pt. and 100# papers how do those compare?
First off, lets find out what it all means:
Now the question is how those translate.
Up above we were looking at 100# offset text vs 18pt stock. Actually these are pretty far apart. So as we look down the list, we see that 100# text paper is only about 6pt (listed as caliper on the chart). Much lighter paper, which you would expect. 18pt., as we find out, is a very sturdy stock – useful for strong pocket folders or paperboard boxes. 100# text is great for printing that might wrap your 3 ring binder.
Is this list absolutely, always going to be exactly right? No. How a paper is made can affect both the caliper and weight. Some papers are denser, but have the same caliper as another paper. But this is a rough guide.
