Print and presentation packaging vary heavily from job to job – many of the questions may be best answered or collaborated on with your printer. Digital or offset printing, 4 color process or 4 cp plus a spot color, the best closure for cost, strength or looks (bearing in mind that what is best for one is not always best for another). Many times your project becomes a collaborative venture as you get input from the product designers, production and sales reps, which results in a fantastic product.
Innovation from your manufacturer is also important. Knowing the capabilities best and what has worked over a large range of products allows your manufacturer to be proactive in finding you solution.
Your sales team will help you navigate your process from start to finish so you want them responsive, knowledgable and able to listen. Any printer worth their salt should be able to provide samples, estimates, mock-ups for new products, templates, proofs and double check your art.
Does your print manufacturer have product designers on staff who can create products to your specifications and work with you to get exactly what you need? Even standard products are designed. Make sure your manufacturer is not just copying a template they found on the internet.

Brooklyn-based multimedia artist Michael Hambouz creates stunning cut-paper artwork, and thanks to The Durst Organization and chashama, 18 of his large-scale cut-paper collages are now on display until November 21, 2014, in the Lobby Gallery of 1133 Avenue of the Americas in New York City.
In a celebration of both cut-paper artwork and small-town manufacturing, Factory Made utilizes a 140-year-old French Paper Company’s own renowned paper stock to give viewers a rare glimpse into the operations of one of the last independently owned paper mills in America.

For the last 20 years we have heard that the world is going paperless, and yet companies are printing materials all the time. So what is happening?
The Psychology of Print
People respond to physical, tactile materials. Look at books. Some people read on kindles or other devices, but for most people I know, the feel of the book, the weight and even the turning of pages are part of the experience of the book. Books are experiences, not a collection of words.
Your presentation and marketing materials are experiences. People respond to the craftsmanship and heft of quality objects in a way an email can not mimic.
Sometimes you just need printed materials.
Some industries need to make sure the information they produce is always available.
Healthcare- From patient files to forms, this industry is paper-intensive, and predicts to be even more so over the coming years. This is one industry that if the lights go out, that information needs to be in the patients hand and available.
Also, it is a lot more comforting to have the information to read in hand instead of just receiving a web address (“You need surgery – go to this website for more information.” is not what I would want to hear…)
Legal – Papers need to be signed, stamped, delivered, read and re-read. Imagine a wedding certificate as an email. Much less romantic.
Financial / Real Estate / Insurance – All these industries produce paper that you need to have access to. If you are investing in a house, stocks or a new business it is nice to have a strong, well made folder or binder to hold your papers. It builds confidence that the organization you are dealing with exists, is legitimate and is planning to be there for you.
Print is just one component of your marketing and presentation, but it is an important one. Companies are printing less, but smarter – creating stand out pieces that have great feel, outstanding print and graphics and work with their branding.
Less but better is the mantra. Maybe you used to print 40,000 pocket folders every year. Much of that was sent to prospects that were not very warm or even pulled from lists. What are the differences in color profiles for print and the web?
Boy are we happy you asked.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), or four color process, is a subtractive color model, meaning if you add together CMY you should get black. Color mixes being what they are, Black was added to make sure a true black could get printed.
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is a additive color process generally used for digital devices and internet. This works on the same principle of mixing light in which a mix of red, green and blue gives you…white. Try that with ink.
PMS colors offer you a way to match exact print colors- since slight variations in mix on press can change a color. Lets say your have a VERY specific corporate color in your logo. CMYK will come very close, but if you want to be exact, you probably want to run the PMS color as a spot color. You can specify PMS for digital use, but it will get translated to RGB.
