Now when you need custom 3-ring binders for a conference, meeting or proposal, you can get all of the quality with beautiful printed images.
Corporate Image has produced 3 ring binders that have won both ‘Best Binder in the World’ and ‘Best Binder in North America’. Our production team are craftspeople, producing strong, sustainable binders with better quality printing that match to detail and craftsmanship that you put into every aspect of your company.
Low quantity custom binders are no problem.
Our short run binders are digitally printed with a high quality printer giving you full bleed images that cover the entire binder. The printed sheets are then laminated with a natural matte laminate that protects them from scuffing and water damage.
Fully cased and lined like a hardcover book, these binders look great, are stronger than any other binder.
How does this compare to a vinyl binder?
It doesn’t. Corporate Image makes recyclable binders that are non-toxic. Our printing is better, the binders last longer, don’t poison the environment or go to landfills, and they look much, much better.
When considering your brand or corporate image, consider whether a vinyl binder sums up what you are trying to say. If not, let us send you a sample to show you how much better your materials can look and feel.

“We gain interested people through our online campaigns. We gain customers when we get our materials in their hands…”
Grab a cup of coffee. Let’s talk.
In a world of sensory overload, communicating by touch is the only way to connect emotionally with your customers.
Print is fun for us because it offers so many things just on the production end. From the craft, the smell, the feel of good paper, everyone in our building has a strong connection to our products.
The thing is, that same connection works for you too.
People respond to tactile things. There is a deep need to feel, to touch, that stimulates different parts of the brain than visual stimulation alone. Even if you are a completely online company, the chances are you can gain more clients and customer by having print materials.
Experience enhances information
Perception is an active process. To “be in touch with” a product, company or person is a primary urge. Our first intelligence is sensory refinement.
Printed materials offer a chance to present your brand quality, strength, and other qualities (eco friendly, glossy, solid, trustworthy) through a second channel. What you say can be backed up through more primal clues that reinforce and strengthen the logical arguments.
Print offers permanence
The sad truth is, people surf and are very distracted online. It is a busy, shifting medium. A well designed print piece creates a more focused, concentrated way to engage your customer’s time and attention.
Once it is read, that 3 ring binder can sit on a shelf for reference. This shelf presence means you are always in front of your audience, even when the power goes out.
Print builds confidence
Whether you are showcasing building products for the contract industry, handing client’s financial information, or providing medical information, the experience, quality and solidity of your marketing materials gives your customers confidence.
Corporate Image has been in the business of printing and manufacturing presentation materials for over 30 years. Their products have won awards from Best Binder in the World to GDUSA packaging awards and CMA awards. We specialize in 3-ring binders, pocket folders, presentation binders and boxes of all sorts. Our products are sustainable, recyclable and printed with soy inks.
When you are creating art for a 3-ring binder, pocket folder, tab dividers, or custom box you need to double check that the art Corporate Image is printing is exactly what you envisioned.
How do you double check? We send you a proof! We have three different kinds of proofs depending on the need.
Oris Proofs for offset printed jobs
The Oris proof is calibrated to the press and gives a good idea of color along with art placement, and content. This is a proof of how the job will print, so all the details like fonts, lines and text show up as you set them up.
The Oris proof is a physical proof we will send to you for approval. This proof will be used at the press to insure the press sheets match what you approved.
Digital PDF Proofs for offset printed jobs
PDF printed proofs help you to check for placement and content. Because monitors are all calibrated differently, these proofs are not for checking color. These are very useful if there were small changes to text or art placement on your Oris proof.
Digitally Printed Proofs for Digital Binder Proofs
It is possible to get a digitally printed proof for your digital binder.
These proofs are printed on the same digital press that your digital binder will be printed on to give you an exact look at what your art will look like on the binder. These proofs are laminated to show exact final color. Generally, these are unnecessary, but if you or your client are concerned, ask your sales rep about the digital binder proofs.
An Iowan motorcycle manufacturer, design firm and 3 ring binder manufacturer walk into a bar…
Indian Motorcycle and Performance Marketing created a dealers guide as classic and elegant as their motorcycles.
For years Corporate Image has been working with healthcare and medical professionals to design presentation materials just for them.
Our focus is to create better designed pieces that last longer, have more design possibilities and are not the non-recyclable, toxic vinyl and plastic they had used in the past.
We have worked with the industry to create 3-ring binders, presentation binders and folders and kits and boxes for everything from patient information kits to medical device boxes – all 100% recyclable and strong!
So we were very excited to hear this:
Good news indeed for both employees and patients in hospitals! New measures are helping green healthcare furniture!
Naked Binder would like to applaud all of the Furniture manufacturers, Healthcare Facilities, Facebook and others who have pledged to eliminate these toxic chemicals from their businesses. (Now to pledge to eliminate vinyl binders?)
Corporate Image has created 3-ring binder for the modern brand – sleek, sustainable with a huge range of options. Before you go planning window cuts, spot UV and other finishing options, make sure you have a good grasp on the basics.
What are you putting in your 3 ring binder?
Before you make any other decisions or hunt through hundreds of pictures of 3 ring binders, find out how many pages and other materials you need. This will clarify ring size, which gives a clear picture of what style of binder, 3-ring mechanism and how strong your binder needs to be.
Knowing the page count of your materials (and whether it vary) is key to determining ring size. Adding pamphlets, samples or give-aways, USB drives or other objects lets you know how large the spine of the binder might need to be.
How many sheets of paper does a binder ring hold?
This depends on what style of ring you choose. A D-ring and a round ring hold the paper differently and have different benefits.
In a D-ring, the paper is held evenly on the right, meaning that your tab dividers all line up and there is a clean line of paper. Some people find the harder to turn the pages than a round ring ( though a slant D-ring solves this problem). A D-ring always mounts on the back panel of a binder – not the spine – so the paper rests on the flat part of the ring when it is closed. This makes the cover a little wider. If you need a small ring, it is good to know there is no 1/2″ D-ring.
Round ring binders (O ring)
A round ring can mount on the spine of a binder, so the covers, front and back, are a little shorter. It is easy to turn pages since it is a continuous curve. The issue with seeing tab dividers toward the bottom of the stack of information is negligible in smaller rings and up to you to decide if it is an issue in large rings. A lot of people don’t see it as a problem. For people with small paper needs – you can get a 1/2″ O ring binder!
The loose leaf binder has been around since about 1860, and since then the design has had only minor changes. During the latter half of the 20th century the vinyl binder came about, billed as a cheaper modern version of the 3 ring binder.
Since those days, we have discovered that vinyl binders not only fall apart quickly, but are impossible to recycle and actually toxic.
Corporate Image started manufacturing 3 ring loose leaf binders 30 years ago and wanted to do better than what was already on the market. They designed some of the first turned edge flex hinge or European hinged binders ever made in the US.
Because the hinge of the binder is pressed directly into the board, these loose leaf binders are super strong. The covers will never just fall off with normal use or because it is cold. Also, these binders could have offset printed covers and liners allowing the artwork to be a fine piece of art.
Over the last 30 years, Corporate Image has pushed sustainability, using soy inks and 100% post consumer waste board, and design, creating a huge range of custom options for 3 ring binders.
From portfolio closures, round spines, custom window cuts, special finishes and sustainable materials, Corporate Image has pushed the loose leaf 3 ring binder into the 21st century and created a binder for the modern brand.

What should you expect from a 3-ring binder manufacturer.
Presentation and 3 ring binder manufacturers are not all alike. If you are new to the game of ordering custom printed products, we’d like to give you a few ideas of what to look for in your print manufacturer.
Innovations… Styles… Options… Strengths….
Print and presentation packaging vary heavily from job to job – many of the questions may be best answered or collaborated on with your printer. Digital or offset printing, 4 color process or 4 cp plus a spot color, the best closure for cost, strength or looks (bearing in mind that what is best for one is not always best for another). Many times your project becomes a collaborative venture as you get input from the product designers, production and sales reps, which results in a fantastic product.
Innovation from your manufacturer is also important. Knowing the capabilities best and what has worked over a large range of products allows your manufacturer to be proactive in finding you solution.
Your sales team will help you navigate your process from start to finish so you want them responsive, knowledgable and able to listen. Any printer worth their salt should be able to provide samples, estimates, mock-ups for new products, templates, proofs and double check your art.
Does your print manufacturer have product designers on staff who can create products to your specifications and work with you to get exactly what you need? Even standard products are designed. Make sure your manufacturer is not just copying a template they found on the internet.
An example: Our product designers create for strength, looks, ease of use and to work with your materials. Even in something as seemingly simple as pocket folders, we re-designed the top 25 pocket folders so you know exactly which envelope they fit in, greatest range of pages, longevity and simplicity.

If you are looking to up your 3 ring binder game, look into a cloth binder.
A cloth binder offers a sense of elegance and permanence that you don’t find in plastic or vinyl binders. Plastic and vinyl project a feeling of impermanence, cost cutting as well as being toxic.
Cloth binder options:
Color. and lots of it.
Why not merge the beauty of cloth with the branding of print? With printed spine wraps your 3 ring binder can have it all.
This binder is a great example of a print and cloth mix. A printed spine wrap visually pops next to the classic look of the foils stamped cloth.
The brand is supported and enhanced by the contrast.
Foil stamping is on cloth offers a range of options and colors allowing you to match corporate colors and logos. Sometimes subtle, sometimes bold, foil stamping gives a unique look for your binder.
The benefits of cloth go beyond looks and feel. Book cloths are incredibly durable making a cloth binder stronger than almost any other binder you can find. The cloth binder you make today can easily still be in use (and looking great) 30 years from now. How do we know? We use our own product and Corporate Image is 30 years old.
If you are considering using a 3 ring binder to represent your company, a cloth binder gives you a feel, look and branding that is unique. Contact us to learn more!

Recycling a 3-ring binder is easy – ( assuming you don’t have a vinyl binder )
If you have a paper based binder – not plastic or vinyl, you are already working with a much more eco friendly binder. The core of ever Corporate Image and Naked Binder is 100% post consumer waste binders board. Every binder is recycled and recyclable.
This Naked Binder video shows you how you can have your eco friendly 3-ring binder ready to recycle in seconds.
Tools You Need:
Flat head (standard) Screwdriver.
Recycling a Vinyl Binder is harder. There is no option to just recycle a vinyl binder the way you can a paper one. They fall apart faster and yet are basically landfill – somewhat toxic landfill. Naked Binder tried to find a way to recycle vinyl binders. If you like you can read about our quest here.
First, pop out the ring, just as you saw above.
Next take a knife and cut open the vinyl about a half inch from the edge of each panel and on the spine. You will probably need to split the vinyl on at least two sides of each panel to remove the chipboard panels inside.
Now that you have the components, the board can go in the paper recycling, the metal in the metal recycling and the vinyl? Now there is a good question. time to get on the phone to find out if your city/county/state has vinyl recycling capabilities. You will find they don’t. While the industry says it recyclable “there are currently no vinyl recycling programs available.” (from thread post).
If you have 6 binders, this is a pain, takes about 30 minutes, and a bit of garbage that will go to landfill. If you are a corporation with 10,000 binders, this is more serious. Besides the time to separate each component, Landfills consider vinyl a toxic asset in large quantities. The 3,000 pounds of vinyl you have will need to be shipped to a special landfill or stored indefinitely.
In these cases, the per binder cost sky rockets. Including labor, storage and shipping (along with short life and toxicity) into the binder price may convince you that the initial cost savings were not worth it.
The moral of this tale is to use paper based 3-ring binders. They are stronger, look better and 100% recyclable!

Sometimes you need a little help writing a Custom Binder RFP/RFQ
Writing an RFP (Request For Proposal) or an RFQ (Request for Quote) for custom printed 3-ring binders (or finding a binder option for that variable data) can be a tough undertaking. There are a lot of variables involved, from the purpose of the binder, the artwork, the size, and even the material.
Whether you are looking for a customized printed 3-ring binder or a binder that allows you to print your own labels to provide that variable data for your binder project look no farther – Corporate Image and Naked Binder can help with your needs.
What do you need to specify for your binder RFP or RFQ?
There are some basic things to consider right off. How the binder is being used will be key. How much information is being put in, how it will be used and how it needs to represent your brand are the basic questions.
What Size Custom 3-ring Binder Do We Need?
The two key things to know here are what size paper are you putting in the binder and how much.
Is the paper US standard, half sheet or A4? If you are in the US or Canada, generally it will be 8.5″ x 11″ paper. If not, the chances are your binder will hold A4.
The next measurement to look for is capacity. For a custom manufacturer binder size is actually a measurement of ring capacity, and not the width of the spine of the binder.
In order to determine ring size in reviewing responses to your RFP, we have provided a quick overview of what ring size would be appropriate for your custom binder application, the table below is based on the number of sheets of 20# bond paper. As you can see D-ring binders hold more paper than Round ring binders. If you have a larger ring size and are using tab dividers, a D-ring also holds the paper flatter on the insuring your tabs are visible.
What are Our Priorities in this Custom 3-ring Binder RFP/RFQ?
Before we can quote a binder, you need to decide the look and feel of your binder. (See a gallery of 3-ring binder styles here!) How you are using it and what art and finish you want will determine whether it is a lined and cased binder or paperboard binder, or whether it will print digitally or offset.
Look and Feel of the binder – how it is used – how it fits with your brand
Binder Options (options list here)
Production Time, Methods, and Preferences
Another key consideration you should outline in your RFP is your anticipated project date, and whether or not the “required by” date is firm. We would specify if the request is doable right away. If the required by date is flexible (or far enough out), it allows us to consider all possible options in meeting your request, and maximizing your budget.
Corporate Image and Naked Binder’s manufacturing plant is located in Des Moines, IA, we are happy to say our binders are made in the USA. This allows for a quick turnaround time and also knowing shipping costs would be less than importing binders.
Outlining these preferences in your RFP/RFQ is helpful in generating an accurate response and enabling us to find the most effective solution for your custom binder project.
How Flexible Are Your Custom Binder Specifications?
These options might include ring size, type of paper, turned-edge, flush cut, bare board binder, or paperboard binders, finishes, D-ring, slant D-ring or round ring, artwork… any one of a number of variables. By indicating which specifications may be able to be modified in order to make your project work, this will provide us with the information needed in order to make a proper and accurate response.
Custom Binder Warehousing, Drop Shipping, and Fulfillment
It is important to include information in your RFP about the implementation of your binder program.
Will your binder program require drop shipping to multiple locations, either at the start of the program or throughout the year?
If you’re drop shipping, will it be “blind drop shipping” or white labeling?

In the US, there is little understanding of the A4 paper size used everywhere except in North America.
It is a great system – elegant and rational – and worth looking at. There is also a reason that your 3-ring binder won’t work with A4 paper as it is taller.
The A series of paper sizes are designed so that when you cut one in half, you get two pieces of the next-smallest-size, and every size has height and width in the same proportion. A little math reveals that one can achieve this by having the height and width in the ratio sqrt(2):1, or approximately 1.414:1.
So once you’ve decided that this is the ratio you want for your page, how do you decide the absolute size?
In the case of the A series of paper sizes, an A0 piece of paper is exactly 1 square metre, requiring width x width x 1.414 = 1, which gives a width of 84.1cm and height of 118.9cm (to the nearest mm).
An A1 piece of paper has a length that’s the same as the width of A0, or 84.1cm, and a width of 84.1cm / sqrt (2) = 59.5cm. Which you’ll notice is half the height of the A0 size (118.9cm).
These relationships hold true going all the way down to A10:
It happens that of the A series, A4 is the one that’s closest to the traditional size used for correspondence, and this has therefore become the de facto standard paper size in the metric world (i.e. pretty much globally except the United States).
One fairly obvious consequence of this is that one can make a booklet of a particular size, from a sheet of the next-largest-size folded in half. So A3 sheets of paper can be folded to create A4-size booklets.
Another interesting consequence is that it becomes easy to calculate the weight of single sheets. Standard photocopy paper is usually 80gsm (grams per square metre), thus an A0 sheet, being 1 square metre, weighs 80g. An A1 weighs 40g, A2 is 20g, A3 is 10g, and A4 is 5g. (And so on.)
We will get calls from people asking what the hole placement is for various rings in binder – from A4 to notebook sized binders.
Until know, we didn’t have a great visual that explain it. Then we found this chart which offers an instant reference for 12 different binder ring configurations. Most of you probably don’t get as excited as we do about these things, but there it is. We were psyched.
Find your binder ring size and the space between the rings is listed on the right:
I have a half sheet notebook binder, and need to punch paper for it. I thumb down until I find “US 3 rings for 51/2 x 81/2″ paper.
There are 3-rings and it says “(2x 2 3/4″)”. This means there are two spaces, 2-3/4″ wide. Since it is a 3 ring set up, set up the middle ring in the center and the other two rings 2-3/4″ our from that and – voilá! – perfectly spaced rings.
The perfect guide for hole placement in 3-ring binders. Carry your copy with you always!
If you want a beautiful, strong custom 3-ring binder, but need small quantities, do we have an option for you!
This binder for the Des Moines Art Festival (an excellent Arts Festival by the way) was designed by Kayli Kunkel and just came off the line yesterday. When we got a look at it, we were excited. When the Art Festival saw it – well lets say they were very pleased:
Check them out for yourselves!

So why limit your exposure to PVC?
Our sister company Naked Binder makes off the shelf eco friendly 3-ring binders and pocket folders and has done a lot of research on vinyls, plastics and the environment. Corporate Image has been printing with soy inks, using recycled papers and board and making custom recycled and recyclable 3-ring binders, pocket folders and boxes for nearly 30 years. Together we plan to make recyclable 3-ring binders and folders the standard, eliminating tons of vinyl waste in our landfills, offices and homes.
Why you ask? So happy you did!
No other plastic contains or releases as many dangerous chemicals. These include dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, cadmium, and organotins. There’s no safe way to manufacture, use or dispose of PVC products
In You and your food. As a persistent bioaccumulative toxin (PBT), it does not breakdown rapidly and travels around the globe, accumulating in fatty tissue and concentrating as it goes up the food chain. Dioxins from Louisiana manufacturing plants migrate on the winds and concentrate in Great Lakes fish. Dioxins are even found in hazardous concentrations in the tissues of whales and polar bears and in Inuit mother’s breast milk. The dioxin exposure of the average American already poses a calculated risk of cancer of greater than 1 in 1,000 – thousands of times greater than the usual standard for acceptable risk. Really scary is that dioxins concentrate in breast milk to the point that human infants now receive high doses, orders of magnitude greater than those of the average adult.
Air pollution near plants: In Mossville, Louisiana, air monitoring conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1999 showed concentrations of vinyl chloride more than 120 times higher than the ambient air standard.
Working in plants: Studies have documented links between working in vinyl chloride production facilities and the increased likelihood of developing diseases including angiosarcoma of the liver, a rare form of liver cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, lymphomas, leukemia, and liver cirrhosis.
The multitudes of additives required to make PVC useful make large scale post consumer recycling nearly impossible for most products and interfere with the recycling of other plastics. Of an estimated 7 billion pounds of PVC thrown away in the US, only 14 million – less than 1/2 of 1 percent – is recycled. The Association of Post Consumer Plastics Recyclers declared efforts to recycle PVC a failure and labeled it a contaminant in 1998. We tried. Learn more about how that went.
Although vinyl is in theory recyclable, there are currently no vinyl recycling programs available. The vast majority of PVCs end up in landfill or incinerated – and both are environmentally hazardous. Currently 0.1% to 3% of vinyl is recycled (mostly industrial waste) of the 2 billion and 4 billion pounds of PVC that is discarded in the US every year.
PVC poses a great risk in building fires, as it releases deadly gases long before it ignites, such as hydrogen chloride which turns to hydrochloric acid when inhaled. As it burns, whether accidentally or in waste incineration, it releases yet more toxic dioxins. PVC burning in landfill fires may now be the single largest source of dioxin releases to the environment. If you see the former entry about recycling, with the approximately 8400 landfill fires every year in the US, this is an issue.

Designing any object, whether a 3-ring binder or a building requires thought into use, environment and user. For years, the idea of healthier environments was not a high priority – people smoked at work, the convenience of plastics out-weighed many other concerns -but with greater information on how things affect us, healthier is becoming a larger component of design.
I thought this article was interesting as a perspective from an architect designing the spaces we all spend a lot of time in:
From our perspective as a manufacturer, what goes inside the building is equally important. We spoke with an architect who had a LEED building fail it’s initial air test because of the furnishings and office supplies. With 60 million + 3-ring binders being sold in the US each year, we believe that from carpeting to binders, each element of your environment needs to be considered.
At Corporate Image, we design every component of our products. From inert laminates to soy inks, recycled papers to 100% recyclability, we track what we use to give you a healthy product that looks and works better than anything else you can find.
If you need custom 3-ring binders for a conference, meeting or proposal, you know that most of the options out there are slim pickings. Perhaps you could get away with a screened vinyl binder if you had to, but does it really represent your company well?
Now you have an option that not only gives you the quality of image, but the quality of construction that shows the attention to detail and craftsmanship that you put into every aspect of your company.

While we talked binders, printing, glue-less pocket folders and the finer details of corrugates, the conference had a lot to offer besides shop talk.
We met Dandy Duck, a hard drinking, world traveler if we have ever met one.
We also walked by the finish line for the Boston marathon (Boston Strong!) everyday.
And we have one photo of Jenny nearly getting arrested…
Also, really enjoyed talking to the people at Monadnock Paper, New Leap paper, Feierisen, Johnny Cupcake, Emma and so many more!
